Wenn sie sich das Bein an einer Ecke anstossen, entstehen manchmal Prellungen mit Blutergüssen. Bei der Prellung wurden Blutadern zerstört, ein Bluterguss entsteht. Dabei fliesst das Blut aus den Blutäderchen in die umliegende Haut. Der Körper sendet Enzyme um das ausgetretene Blut abzubauen. Beim Abbau der roten Blutzellen wird das Hemoglobin zerlegt, das den roten Blutzellen ihre Farbe gibt. Wenn Hemoglobin zerlegt wird, bleiben dunkle blau-schwarze Teilchen übrig. Sie geben dem Bluterguss ihre Farbe.
Ein ganz ähnlicher Mechanismus ist für die Augenringe verantwortlich. Vergleichbar mit dem Vorgang bei einer Prellung verlassen ständig minimale Mengen an Blutzellen aus den kleinen Adern (Kapillaren) in unserem Körper und werden darauf zerlegt. Da es minimale Mengen sind, wird dieser Vorgang nicht sichtbar. Da in dem Bereich um die Augen herum viele Kapillare vorhanden sind, neigt dieser Bereich häufiger zu kleineren Blutergüßen. Und leider ist in dieser Region das Unterhautfettgewebe schwindend gering und die Haut sehr dünn, wodurch die Färbung schneller sichtbar sind. Die zerlegten Blutzellen, mit ihrer dunklen blau-schwarzen Färbung, werden also als dunkle Schatten, als Augenringe in dem Bereich unter den Augen sichtbar.
